“I wanted a Jane Austen show that centered women of color from the start, especially in light of leaps of representation within historical drama… and to do so, we sought out a time period where we could make a show that acknowledges these identities without solely focusing on oppression, rather than being ‘color blind’ or solely steeped in racial trauma; and that’s what led us to New York City in 1976… It gave us the opportunity to make a joyful, Jane Austen story AND center communities that have been excluded from ‘the classics’ without glazing over what it means to be a person of color in a certain time period.” — Anjali Ramakrishnan, Playwright & Director
